Observations of Type I Bursts from Neutron Stars

چکیده
Observations of Type I X-ray bursts have long been taken as evidence that the sources are neutron stars. Black body models approximate the spectral data and imply a suddenly heated neutron star cooling over characteristic times of seconds to minutes. The phenomena are convincingly explained in terms of nuclear burning of accreted gas on neutron stars with low mass companion stars. Prospects are promising that detailed theory and data from RXTE and future missions will lead to better determinations of important physical parameters (neutron star mass and radius, composition of the accreting gas, distance of the source). Among the variety of bursts observed, there are probably representatives of different kinds of explosive burning. RXTE’s discovery of a 2.5 ms persistent coherent period from one Type I burster has now linked bursters indisputably to the epitome of a neutron star, a fast spinning magnetic compact object. Oscillations in some bursts had already been thought to arise from the neutron stars’ rotations. Detailed observations of these oscillations are touchstones of how the explosive bursts originate and progress, as well as independent measures of the neutron star parameters.

Oscillations during Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts: a New Probe of Neutron Stars
Observations of thermonuclear (also called Type I) X-ray bursts from neutron stars in low mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) have revealed large amplitude, high coherence X-ray brightness oscillations with frequencies in the 300 600 Hz range. Substantial spectral and timing evidence point to rotational modulation of the X-ray burst flux as the cause of these ...

The last few years have seen the discovery of a number of new aspects of Type I X-ray bursts: the extremely energetic and long duration superbursts, intermediate duration bursts at low luminosities, mHz QPOs, and burst oscillations. These discoveries promise a new understanding of nuclear burning on accreting neutron stars, and offer a chance to use observations to probe neutron star properties...
متن کاملOn the Physics of Type I X-ray Bursts on Accreting Neutron Stars at High Accretion Rates
We investigate the effect of the hot CNO cycle breakout reaction 15O(α,γ)19Ne on the occurrence of type I X-ray bursts on accreting neutron stars. For frp . 0.1, where frp is a dimensionless factor by which we multiply the 15O(α,γ)19Ne reaction rate of Caughlan & Fowler (1988), our model predicts that bursts should occur only for accretion rates Ṁ below a critical value ≈ 0.3ṀEdd. This agrees w...

I review our understanding of the thermonuclear instabilities on accreting neutron stars that produce Type I X-Ray bursts. I emphasize those observational and theoretical aspects that should interest the broad audience of this meeting. The easily accessible timescales of the bursts (durations of tens of seconds and recurrence times of hours to days) allow for a very stringent comparison to theo...
متن کاملType I X-ray Bursts at Low Accretion Rates
Neutron stars, with their strong surface gravity, have interestingly short timescales for the sedimentation of heavy elements. Recent observations of unstable thermonuclear burning (observed as X-ray bursts) on the surfaces of slowly accreting neutron stars (< 0.01 of the Eddington rate) motivate us to examine how sedimentation of CNO isotopes affects the ignition of these bursts. We further es...
